How to calculate your Life Path number from your birth date

The Life Path is the best-known number in Pythagorean numerology. It comes only from your birth date, and you can work it out in under a minute with pen and paper.

Step by step, with an example

  1. 1. Write the full date

Use day, month and a four-digit year. In the example, the date is July 14, 1990.

    07/14/1990

  2. 2. Add up every digit

Split the date into single digits and add them all at once, zeros included.

    0 + 7 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 31

  3. 3. Reduce to a single digit

If the result has two digits, add them again. Repeat until you reach a number from 1 to 9.

    3 + 1 = 4

  4. 4. That's your Life Path

Someone born on July 14, 1990 has Life Path 4.

    Life Path = 4

What about 11, 22 and 33?

If the sum is 11, 22 or 33, stop there: these are master numbers and are not reduced. A sum of 22, for example, stays 22 instead of becoming 4.

Why other tools sometimes give a different result

Some methods reduce the day, month and year separately before adding them. For most dates the final result is the same; the difference shows up in some master-number cases. Here we add all the digits at once.
